essaouira the city of the sahara and the sea

Description of the blog

Want to discover Essaouira? There are a thousand and one ways to experience it. The city of Essaouira has a strong tourist potential, thanks in particular to its natural, historical and cultural assets, thus becoming a major tourist destination.

Its medina, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the islet of Mogador, its port, dating from the 18th century and its beaches, allowing the practice of water sports, make the province a quality tourist destination.

Located on the Atlantic coast, Essaouira is a port city and municipality of Morocco, on the Atlantic coast, with approximately 78,000 inhabitants, the city is 173 km north of Agadir, 174 km west of Marrakech, and 406 km south of Casablanca.

Essaouira, a charming port and lively seaside resort overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, is a veritable maze of streets with both old-style and modern architecture, with pretty hotels set up in traditional Moroccan riads in the old town.

There are also modern hotels along the beach. Essaouira is also renowned for the practice of windsurfing and kitesurfing, thanks to the powerful winds which blow almost constantly in the bay as well as the annual organization of a stage of the Kitesurfing World Cup.

The medina of Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, is an exceptional example of a fortified city from the mid-18th century, surrounded by a Vauban-style wall, its kasbah also is a marvel not to be missed.

The Essaouira corniche is exquisitely beautiful, just in front of the Dzira and in front of the small port.

A few kilometers to the south, towards the road to Agadir, one can appreciate islets and Riads, as well as a unique beach because still virgin, it is the beach of Sidi Kaouki, located about 25 km away. from the city.

All around there are many argan fields.

This is an opportunity for tourists to see and appreciate argan oil, unique in this region and nowhere else.

The port of Essaouira is one of the most spectacular and lively places in the city, especially when the fishermen return. Imagine the scenery: there are dozens of trawlers in the shipyard and many blue wooden boats moored in tight rows in the large harbor basin.

The fishermen deliver their freshly caught fish and seafood to the quay and negotiate it, and there are countless numbers of gulls and seagulls arriving in their hundreds to feast on leftovers all around the auction!

We take full eyes with these colors so bright, white and blue being the main colors of this magnificent painting. It is not for nothing that many international artists have decided to settle there ...

There is also this mixture of powerful scents where the iodized air swept by the sirocco mixes, with the subtle scents of the alleys of the medina with woody notes accompanied by the scents of orange blossom or jasmine. There is also this surprising and spectacular marine decor that amazes us at every moment ...

Did you know that the Essaouira medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Whether it is in the fishing port with these blue boats crowded by the hundreds, or on the ramparts of the old town with the Atlantic as far as the eye can see as a backdrop, in short, we are amazed ...

When it comes to flavors, we are far from being disappointed, even more so if we are fond of fish and seafood!

Listen and you will hear the song of the gulls on the ramparts, but also, in the squares and at sunset, the sound of African percussions which resonates in all the alleys of the medina… Yes, Essaouira also lives to the rhythm of Gnaoua music, famous all over the world. Moreover, the Essaouira Gnaoua Festival attracts many visitors every year.
