safi: city of pottery

Description of the blog

Safi is a city in western Morocco located in the Marrakech-Safi region of Marrakech. Its rich folklore, craftsmanship and history will not be difficult to attract culture lovers. Rent a car to discover the city of Safi, the pottery and its region. Since the 1960s, the city has also provided a major industrial park for phosphate conversion. Safi currently has 700,000 inhabitants. Like El Jadida, Safi's historic ups and downs are closely linked to the customs and architectural structure of the port, which sets it apart from other towns. This 15th-century Portuguese fortress (which was once the seat of the governor) and its castle were fully restored in 1963.

Today, Safi is known as the pottery capital of Morocco because of its rich clay. The city has a large number of pottery and ceramics production areas, the most important of which are Pottery Mountain and Chaaba Valley (within the city) and the towns of Sidi Abdrahmany and Sadra (near Safi). La Colline des Potiers has more than 700 artisans in 72 traditional kilns and 27 gas kilns in more than 40 workshops. The largest Tarkin in the world is also located in Safi. Safi is also a city with traditional music and folklore. The most famous of these is the famous Fantasia: an equestrian sport resulting from the military tradition of North Africa. The musical styles of the region vary considerably, from Al-Aïta in Andalusia to Al-Malhoune. From an architectural point of view, the city of Safi is a place of various buildings, like the castle of Mel in the 16th century fortress, the national museum of ceramics of Dara Sultan (the former residence of the Alawite sultan) or the Portuguese cathedral. The medina and the rue du Souk are also home to many buildings whose architecture is inspired by various religious sects. Its huge monumental portal leads to the land of machines or weapons, where you can admire twelve ancient Spanish and Dutch cannons pointing towards the ocean.

It has a unique geographical and natural environment, offering a vast plain composed of agricultural soils, adjacent to high quality sandy beaches and underground soil rich in mineral resources (phosphate, gypsum and barite), and adjacent to the ocean Atlantic for more than 150 kilometers.

All these assets have made the city a tourist attraction and a hub of economic activity for multiple sectors (fish canning, flour milling, mineral resource development, etc.). Safi is a beautiful town on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. To get there from Marrakech, it takes around 2h30 to the highway. To facilitate travel, it is best to rent a comfortable car.

Among the very famous places in Safi it is, Château de la mer
