tangier: the link between two continents

Description of the blog

Tangier (in Arabic Tanga), is located in the north of Morocco, it is a city that links two continents, Africa and Europe. Tangier occupies a pivotal place between its two continents, this exceptional location has allowed it to play first-rate culturally and economically. Sea fishing is a very old activity in Tangier and remains one of the most dynamic economic sectors in the city. Due to its location and its history, Tangier was enriched by many foreign influences, and when in 1906 France and Spain divided Morocco, the city obtained a special status of free and international city. For fifty years, Tangier was at the same time North African, Latin and Anglo-Saxon; a really common place.

Diplomats, spies, artists or writers; the international visitors in love with Tangier were numerous and for some illustrious; Samuel Beckett, Tennessee Williams and Saint-Exupéry the pilot writer. And which shows the place of this city in the hearts of famous people; These are the words of William Burroughs, the author of Le Festin Nu, who said, "It is in Tangier that I dreamed of such a credible madness. Yes, a writer struggling with his own demons, like me when I was walking late at night, drunk and lost in the alleys of the ploughshare. Yes, this feast was mine too ”.

In the same way, Tangier is considered a friend of the cinema because several directors have been content to use the image of the city to exploit an exotic vein of Tangier. This city composes several elements necessary for cinema like; luminosity and transparency of the air, architectural heritage, varied landscapes, inexpensive extras legitimized the shooting choices.

The historical monuments of Tangier

Tangier Medina: The beauty of its site and its lights have made it a source of inspiration for generations of the greatest artists.

Place du Grand April 9, 1947: historically, it is the most important square in Tangier because it is the symbol of King Mohamed V's speech in 1947, under international domination.

It can be considered as the junction point between old Tangier and the new city. Today has become the reach of the old Medina and a meeting place.

Casbah de Tanger: was built on the highest land in the city of Tangier, above the medina. Casbah has ancient palaces, the most important of which, Dar el Makhzen, was the residence palace for the various Moroccan Sultans when they came to Tangier. The Dar el Makhzen is now the seat of the Kasbah Museum, which you can visit. This museum is made up of two distinct sectors: the archaeological museum and the ethnographic museum.

There is also the Casbah Mosque which is one of the oldest monuments in Tangier. It was built in 1684 on the order of Sultan Moulay Ismail the day after Tangier was liberated from the British occupation.

Cap Spartel: is also called Cap de la Vigne. The Cap Spartel Lighthouse is located about 14 kilometers west of Tangier and is considered among the largest lighthouses in Africa. From March until April this is the most suitable area for bird watching.

The Caves of Hercules: are located at Cape Spartel. Today, no one is able to explain the initial creation and origin of these caves.

Saint André Church: located in the historic center of Tangier at rue d'Angleterre and it is among the most atmospheric districts of the city.

PARC PERDICARIS (FORÊT RMILAT): this is the most suitable place to spend a Sunday for the people of Tangier. This park is under the name of an American diplomat, John H. Perdicaris, and is the owner of the land. The most important element that characterizes this park is the harmony between the architecture and the cosmopolitan aspect of the city of the time.

Cape Malabata: is located on the bay of the coast of the Strait of Gibraltar, consists of a lighthouse and a castle. By its position, it offers an exceptional view on the Strait of Gibraltar and on the Spanish coast, on the city and the bay of Tangier.

The Plaza de Toros: was established in 1950 and considered since 2016 as a historical monument, its style is Hispano-Moorish. At the time, this is the place where bullfights took place.

Café el Hafa: was built in 1921 by Ba’hamed. It is among the most visited places in Tangier, offers an incredible sea view with domination of collective culture over this place.
